There is no more dynamic place for science and technology companies to locate than the site of M Square, the University of Maryland Research Park.

The University of Maryland

The University of Maryland, College Park is the flagship university in a state which is among the most affluent, wired and highly educated in the United States. Established in 1856, the University is one of the Top 20 public research universities in the nation, 47th in the world. Maryland is one of only eleven institutions—public or private—with Top 20 programs in Math, Physics, Computer Science and Engineering. We attract highly talented students and world-renowned faculty, enjoy thriving partnerships with federal agencies, and provide many services for businesses. Located inside the Capital Beltway, only 8 miles from the Nation's Capital on a beautiful suburban campus, our diverse population of 46,690 includes: 24,000 undergraduates and nearly 10,000 graduate students; 9,820 employees; and approximately 1,500 visitors daily.

M Square, The University of Maryland Research Park

The State of Maryland's largest research park, when fully built out, will encompass 2 million SF and will employ 6,500 people. Its location next to a world-class university has obvious advantages. M Square tenants and neighbors avail themselves of access to libraries, research support, faculty expertise, student employees, conference and recreation facilities, world-class performing arts and NCAA Division I athletic events.

The establishment of M Square is also evidence of our long term investment in the future of the community and region, as is the development of the surrounding neighborhood. The park's anchor tenant, NOAA, joins a thriving community that already includes the Center for Advanced Study of Language, FDA, and The American Center for Physics, emerging private technology companies, and a new mixed-use project—East Campus—which will feature retail and residential options at the entrance to the University.

The location of the park—adjacent to the College Park Metro (Washington's subway and bus transit system) and the MARC Commuter Rail station—links it physically and programmatically not just to the University, but to the network of advantages unique to Washington—federal laboratories, government agencies, international embassies, policy institutes and international media outlets. MARC Rail connects travelers to Thurgood Marshall BWI International Airport, the busiest of three airports in the Washington-Baltimore Metro area. The park also boasts among its neighbors, the oldest continually operating airport in the U.S., College Park Airport.

M Square focuses on key technology clusters, including:

  • Homeland and national security

  • Environmental and earth sciences, weather prediction, and global climate change

  • Food Safety and security
